After American reporter Grant Wahl tweeted about his “unnecessary ordeal” being temporarily detained for wearing a rainbow t-shirt at a World Cup stadium, a Qatari doctor fumed at Western ignorance of the Muslim country’s anti-gay laws.
“I don’t know when will westerners realize that their values aren’t universal,” tweeted Dr. Nayef Nahar Al-Shammari. “There are other cultures with different values that should be equally respected. Let’s not forget the West is not the spokesperson for humanity.” I’m OK, but that was an unnecessary ordeal. Am in the media center, still wearing my shirt. Was detained for nearly half an hour. Go gays 🌈 https://t.co/S3INBoCz89
Also on Monday, football governing body FIFA banned teams from wearing “One Love” rainbow armbands promoting LGBTQ+ rights.
