Singapore made a strong decision and decided to decriminalize sex between men. In the Asia-Pacific region, sex between same-sex isn't something easy to find in the public domain. Many have welcomed this move made by Singapore and label it as a "step in the right direction for LGBTQ rights."
Vibrant Prime Minister Lee Hsien made it clear that after a handful time of consultations, Singapore made a clear decision to abolish colonial-era laws that prohibited sex between men. During the National Day Rally address, the premier emphasized that there's a need to stop and put an end to untidy compromises or state, sanctioned discrimination against the LGBTQ community. Since the 1930s, Section 377A of the penal code has been in existence but has never been enforced for long. When leaders worried about a potential rebellion from religious groups the prime minister "This is the right thing to do, and something that most Singaporeans will now accept," he said.
As the LGBTQ community is celebrating this victory, The premier in his speech made it clear that there's going to be a serious warning and a limited appetite for further liberalization. "Most Singaporeans do not want the repeat to trigger a drastic shift in our societal norms across the board, including how we define marriage, what we teach children in schools, what is shown on free-to-air television and cinemas, or what is generally acceptable conduct in public," Lee Hsien said.
After this development, many gay rights activities raised serious concerns about the uncertainty of any legal protection that will guard LGBTQ citizens against discrimination. Even though so many people arent sure how this is going to end but singapore set the bar high for the rest of the countries Asia.
