Micheal Sam with St. Louis Rams
Born January 7, 1990, Micheal Alan Sam Jr is an American football defensive lineman currently playing for Barcelona Dragon in the European League Football (EFL).
As a player, he has played for a number of clubs and began his college career at the University of Missouri (Mizzou), St. Louis Rams, Dallas Cowboys, 2015 NFL Veteran Combine, Montreal Alouettes, Hiatus, and Barcelona Dragons.
In a family of eight, Sam is the seventh born. His parents JoAnn and Micheal Alan Sam Sr. separated when he was young. Just like man blacks in the hood, Sam grew up in a violating neighborhood. As a child, he had to watch his elder brother die from a gunshot wound while another has been missing since 1998.
His sister who was born before him didn't make it out of infancy while his other two brothers of him are still in prison. While arresting one of his brothers, Sam was once accidentally maced by police.
Growing up with a Jehovah's witness mother, she never wanted Sam to play football, and still, Sam always wanted to play it which made it difficult for them to live in harmony.
Later in high school, he left his home and began staying with his classmate. They gave him a bedroom and Sam completed household chores and a thank you. After completing college, Sam became the first member of his family to attend college.
In August 2013 Sam sent a letter to his father concerning his sexuality. Speaking to the media, he disclosed that "old-school....man-and-woman type of guy. I don't want my grandkids raised in that kind of environment." said. Although he publically denied that he was terribly misquoted, The New York Times maintained that he was accurately and fairly quoted.
After a week, Sam came out publically while introducing yourself session was up, he informed his Missouri teammates that he was gay and fortunately enough they all supported and encouraged him.
While speaking to his teammates, Jose said that he was proud of him for not becoming him like him though he still loves him. Whatever lifestyle my brother chooses, I still love and support him.
Back in Missouri, anti-gay activist Shirley Phelps-Roper and 15 other members of the Westboro Baptist Church organized a hate group that was aimed at stopping his appearance. Fortunately enough students also a counter-protest in front of protesters. Sam still regards the act as heartwarming and will forever be grateful to those students who stood by him during his trying moment.
Sam got engaged to Vito Cammisano who is a fellow alum of the University of Missouri and a member of the swim team. They announced their separation in January 2015. although they still regard themselves as friends.
Not long after their separation, In April 2016 Sam was against a bill that would enable discrimination against LGBTQ. Together with Missouri State Capital, an advocacy group lobbied state legislators.
